Cha-Cha
The Cha Cha (sometimes called the "Cha Cha Cha") is a bold, "cheeky" dance that has its origins in Cuba. Characterized by sharp leg and hip action, it often has a flirtatious tone to it. The Cha cha is danced to a distinct "2-3-cha-cha-CHA" beat (or, 2-3-4-and-1).
In the 1950s, the Cha Cha was generally known as a popular social dance in the United States; its beat was integrated into much of popular music at the time. It had a relatively slow beat compared to that of the Mambo, and was therefore thought of as more accessible. The ballroom Cha Cha as we know it today has a faster beat, often danced to Latin rock and pop. As in most of the Latin dances, the Cha Cha is danced by stepping first with the ball of the foot, and then the heel; one's weight should generally be forward on the foot. The weighted leg should be straight, while the free leg bends; this allows for a natural settling of the hips. Steps are kept compact, and there should be no "rise and fall" as in the Standard dances.
In competition, the Cha Cha is generally danced either first or second in the sequence of five Latin dances.
