Foxtrot

When it comes to the Foxtrot, think relaxed, smooth, and jazzy. Often danced to vocal big band music, the Foxtrot features long and flowing movements while maintaining a cheerful poise. It is said that style was originally introduced into mainstream culture around 1913 by Harry Fox; before settling into the Dancesport form we know today, it went through a number of incarnations as a social dance that was done to both slow and fast tempos. Many popular Rock and Roll songs were even billed as foxtrots, though today it tends to be danced to big band and swing style music. Eventually, the Foxtrot became most widely known as one of the Standard competitive ballroom dances.

The Foxtrot progresses smoothly and continuously across the floor, with a slight rise-and-fall motion (more subtle than in the Waltz). It is danced in "closed-hold" position, with the gentleman and the lady slightly offset to each other's left. It travels around the floor in the traditional counter-clockwise path, and features figures such as the Feather Step, Three Step, and Closed Impetus with Feather Finish.
