Finding the right dance partner for you

Ballroom dancing can be social or competitive, but it's most rewarding with a partner. While that partner can easily be your teacher (with whom you can take lessons and compete in the Pro-Am division), you might prefer to partner someone of your same skill level. To grow and develop as dancers together proves to be a mutually rewarding experience.

Looking for a partner when you never have before, however, can be a daunting and confusing endeavor. There is no "official" method of seeking out a partner - so where to begin?

As with almost anything nowadays, the internet can be a great resource. Search for ballroom and dancesport websites, where people often post classified ads or communicate via community message boards about their partner search. Read others' ads, and post your own; describe you level, age, location, and overall goals when it comes to ballroom (social? competitive? strictly practice?).

Frequent social dances in your community as well; you never know when you'll connect with someone just by word of mouth. Dance with as many people as you can, make conversation, and just ask around. You've got nothing to lose, only to gain - worse come to worst, you'll have made some new friends!
