International Latin
Paso Doble
The Paso Doble is the dance of the bullfight, in which the man is the "toreador", and the woman, his "cape." Its roots lie in Spanish Flamenco and Gypsy dances; the dance is based on an 8-count and features "highlights," or clearly defined flourishes, in the music. The Paso Doble portrays strength, fire, and male dominance; both the man and the lady maintain a frame with the chest open, hips forward, and rounded arms.
The Paso Doble resembles the International Standard dances more than any of the other Latin dances. Steps are taken with a heel lead, and the hold is more widely and strictly held up. It is a progressive dance (like the Samba), and travels around the dance floor in a counterclockwise pattern. Paso Doble is also specifically choreographed to the structure of the music, most notably to the piece called Espaßa Caßi. This piece of music features three segments, each punctuated by a highlight; routines are often choreographed with a flourish on these highlights. Unlike the other Latin dances, which can often be danced socially, the Paso Doble is generally only danced in competition.
