Quickstep
The Quickstep is the fastest and most energetic of the Standard dances; its lighthearted feel sets it apart. It features quick footwork, hops, skips, and runs, while maintaining a closed hold throughout. It's danced to a quick, jazzy swing beat, creating the illusion of flying across the floor. In competitions, the Quickstep is usually danced last.
Following a 2/4 or a 4/4 beat, the Quickstep is sometimes similar to a fast Foxtrot; its patterns and technique, however, are distinct. The dance has its roots in a number of popular dances, primarily those of the 1920s (Charleston, Peabody, Shag, and One Step). Its basic is dances to a "slow, slow, quick-quick" rhythm; some typical steps include the Progressive Chasse, the Closed Impetus, and the Running Finish. As with all the Standard Ballroom dances, it is done in closed hold, moving in a counter-clockwise pattern on the dance floor.
