International Latin
Rumba
Though often thought of as a slow dance, the Rumba tends to emphasize the contrast between fast and slow to create a dynamic representation of passion and love. Like the Cha-Cha, the Rumba has Cuban origins; the distinctive "figure 8" hip action is present throughout. Rumba highlights the man's masculinity and strength, which in turn frames the lady's feminine sensuality.
The steps and figures of Rumba are derived from dance moves observed in pre-revolutionary Havana. Adapted for the ballroom floor by Europeans, Rumba is danced to music that is typically about 120 beats per minute. The basic step in Rumba is similar to Cha Cha in foot placement, but without the chasse step on the split fourth beat. Like most of the Latin ballroom dances, the feet track with each step to always stay in contact with the floot, stepping first with the ball of the foot, followed by the heel. Each step is taken onto a straightened leg, while the free leg is relaxed. The Rumba allows more time to work through the hips, accentuating the Cuban motion.
