Tango
Rooted in Spanish culture, the Tango is a fiery dance done to sharp, dramatic music. Unlike Argentinean Tango, which has more a close and intimate feel, the ballroom form is defined by its staccato movements, strong hold, and quick head snaps. Some say the Tango is the most passionate of the Standard ballroom dances.

The Dancesport form of Tango developed when the Argentinean social dance was brought to England. Its popularity started to take hold in the 1920s; it eventually evolved into what we know as the Standard competitive dance. It contrasts slow and "slithery" movements with quick, staccato steps; some describe it as having a "sneaky" or "stalking" quality. The music tends to be a kind of a strong march, with a heavy emphasis on the downbeat. The "hold" for Tango is slightly different from other Standard ballroom dances; the lady locks her left elbow and thumb under the man's right arm, in a bent position. The Tango is also unique in that its movement is steady, with no rise and fall.
