Viennese Waltz

A relative of the Slow Waltz, but with a much faster tempo, this dance has its roots in 17th and 18th century Europe - most notably, in the Austrian court of the Romantic era. The Viennese Waltz is danced to a rapid 1-2-3 beat and is characterized by constant rotation - but maintaining a smoothness and poise all the while.

The music for Viennese Waltz is most often danced to instrumental music (when you think of the music of Johann Strauss, think of the Viennese Waltz). The dance has gone through a number of incarnations as a folk dance and a social dance before becoming the Viennese Waltz we know in Standard Ballroom. While older forms of the dance had couples in semi-closed position, or even side by side, today the couple maintains a closed hold - the lady's left arm resting atop the man's right. Typical figures include the Natural Turn, the reverse Turn, Closed Changes, and Fleckerls.
