Trying out with a partner

So, you've made plans to meet up with a prospective dance partner. What do you do in your first meeting in order to gauge whether you'll want to dance together?

Before anything else, it's helpful to talk about logistics and goals. Do your schedules align? Would you be available to practice and take lessons at the time times? Discuss how often you would like to take lessons; if one of you would like to take one or two a week, whereas the other can only afford the time (or budget) to take a few each month, that may make it tough on the partnership. Common goals are a must: are you looking to dance socially, compete, or just practice steps together?

Then again, remember that it's always good to be flexible, and a dance partnership is about mutual respect. Sometimes, there are ways around logistical issues (want to take lessons more often than your partner? Perhaps you can take a few lessons solo, and use those times to work on technique with your teacher one-on-one. Can you rearrange any existing commitments to make your current schedule work with your partner's? Talk about it.

Finally, dance some basic steps together; figure out the feel of leading and following, and see how you work through more challenging steps together. If it doesn't seem like you're in sync for whatever reason, don't give up; you may have to try out with a few different people until you find the right match.
